WANA (Jan 03) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, underscored the importance of Afghanistan’s cooperation in maintaining the natural flow of border rivers shared by the two countries. He stated, “Respecting mutual interests and avoiding unilateral actions are prerequisites for deepening ties between Iran and Afghanistan.”

Referring to the historical, cultural, and religious bonds between the two nations, as well as the long-standing presence of Afghan nationals in Iran, Baghaei called for adherence to international legal principles and bilateral agreements. He added, “Good neighborliness and equitable utilization of shared water resources are principles that both sides must prioritize.”

Baghaei also expressed Iran’s concerns over the impact of new dam constructions in Afghanistan on the water flow into Iran. He emphasized that the use of water resources must align with bilateral treaties and customary international principles. He noted that the Iranian Foreign Ministry has conveyed these concerns to Afghan authorities through diplomatic channels, expecting responsible decisions to be made in this regard.

These remarks come as the shared rivers between Iran and Afghanistan play a critical role in meeting water needs, preserving the environment, and supporting economic development in both countries.
